FLASH PLAYER SHUTTING DOWN

Posted by Greenfield56 - April 15th, 2019

I just heard about flash player being discontinued in 2020, what does this mean for the future of Newgrounds? Will Newgrounds die with it? I'm incredibly stressed about this all, what do y'all think? (Excuse the link, I couldn't find the original source)

Hey, I just heard about it too! Was it that post in r/Me_irl?

As for the future of Newgrounds, this thread covers it.

TLDR is Newgrounds will still function, pretty much all videos are in MP4 now and art and music is fine. Some games will function without needing flash, but Newgrounds is going to put out a standalone player so you can download and play games that can't be converted.

Fulpster has been preparing ever since the news first hit. He's downloading all of the classic files and is going to feature them in an offline program I believe.

All of the stuff you see nowadays are using a free converter tool named Swivel that Newgrounds made, that's why most videos can stream now; instead of preload, it's also how people have uploaded videos from flash to You Tube, they how ever are not flash files now so those will stay when the change takes place. In doing so Tom also has managed to open up the site for than just swf files.
